Logitech Squeezebox radio with Spotify review

Logitech Squeezebox Radio

I just received the Logitech Squeezebox radio yesterday to give it a good test with Spotify, and apart from a few small issues which could be improve upon, this is a great Internet Radio to have.

Almost a year ago I upgraded my Spotify account to premium so that I could listen to music on my HTC Desire while cycling to work. All the time I hoped for a simple and affordable solution for listening to Spotify in the back garden or in the toolshed.

A few months ago Logitech made this all possible by creating the Spotify client for their latest generation of Squeezebox players, it took me a while to get around to testing it, and now I regret not doing it earlier...

When the player arrived I was surprised at the weight of this little device, but it makes the unit feel very solid and with the rubberized feet it stays in place when pressing the control buttons. It;s also shiny, very shiny... I'm not a fan of glossy products, but unfortunately it seems to be all the rage at the moment.

Setting the Squeezebox radio up is very simple and intuative, with all input going via the large button, I did regret my 15 character WiFi password though... After that I set up my account at mysqueezebox.com, added the Spotify plugin and was able to listen to my favourite Spotify playlists with about 15 minutes of receiving the Radio, great stuff!

I also installed the Squeezebox Server software on my ReadyNAS Duo, and after a short wait for indexing (I don't have a very large MP3 collection) all my songs were also available to the Radio. Theres also Internet Radio, with your IP location being used to show a list of local radio stations which is also a great feature.

The only points I don't like about this radio are the following:

  • The battery pack is an optional extra, costing €50.- (but you do get a remote with the pack)
  • The spotify client doesn't have 'Artist Radio Mode' (or even the standard radio mode). I realize the mobile client also does not have this, and I miss it on my HTC as well. I hope that this feature will be included soon.
  • Searching for Spotify tracks is a little difficult with the wheel, it's easier to set up playlists on your PC first and the acces them from the Squeezebox Radio.

All in all though, a great little radio, the sound quality is surprisingly good, and the Spotify client alone is reason enough to get this device. You can buy the Logitech Squeezebox Radio at Amazon.co.uk.

I like this radio so much I'll be buying the Logitech Squeezbox Touch soon!

Samsung NF210 netbook review

Samsung NF210 Netbook

When you open up the packaging and reveal this little netbook, your first thoughts will be 'Wow! that's different.'

Whether you like the design or not (I actually quite like it) you can't deny that Samsung have done a great job on the NF-210. It's a solid, well built netbook with some nice finishing touches.

With a dual core atom processor running four threads it's more than up to any task the average netbook will ever need to accomplish. The second core definitely helps when running more than one application at a time with a virus scanner in the background, sharing the load whenever things get a little heavy.

The keyboard, while not full-size is a dream to type on with it's 'chiclet' type keys, it fells natural and solid, typing is a breeze. Startup from sleep is incredibly quick, within a few seconds you can continue with your work, and the connection with a bluetooth mouse is almost instant.

Unfortunately, you only get 1GB of memory with the machine, but it is very easy to upgrade, for about 20 euros you can get a 2GB stick of DDR3 SoDimm memory, it really does make a difference!

It really has everything you need; Blutooth 3.0, WLAN, SD Card Reader, a Webcam, 250 GB hard drive, 3 USB ports, and best of all, 10 hours of battery life!

All in all, a great little machine, it performs well, is eye catching and you can work all day on it without a recharge, I can definitely recommend it!

You can buy the Samsung NF210 at Amazon.
